Caroline DeBruhl

I’m a writer, witch, and wedding officiant working out of the Tampa Bay area.

As a writer—Fiction is my first love. It’s why I started writing short stories, stage and screenplays, novellas and novels, and why I went on to earn my MFA from Texas State University in 2018. But my interest in stories extends beyond the fictitious. As a columnist and contributing writer for Creative Loafing Tampa, I’ve written long-form investigative stories as well as cultural pieces, all while covering the book beat. My tarot-driven advice column, “The Oracle of Ybor,” began in CL Tampa and is now syndicated.

As a witch— I’ve worked as a “public witch” since 2010 when I began reading Tarot professionally. Since then, I've taught classes on Tarot and other divination techniques, developed “spell kits” for companies, worked as an occult consultant for screenwriters and presented papers on witchcraft at conferences. It might seem like an unusual career path, but as a New Orleanian born and raised, I always thought there was something respectable about soothsaying.

As an officiant— I became a wedding officiant in June 2015, the day after the Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalized gay marriage in the US so that I could marry my friends. It was a true honor to be there for them—and I learned it was a job that I loved. As a writer with a background in Religious Studies and a love for ritual and celebration, I discovered the joy of being an officiant, of helping couples tie the knot (sometimes literally.)
